NOTES
This episode originally aired in primetime
along with the first season finale of Spider-Man. This episode was originally going to air in the fourth season, but it was bumped up due to problems with "No Mutant Is An Island" and "Longshot." See the episode page on "No Mutant Is An Island" for more details. Kipp, a storyboard artist who worked on the show, reveals some secrets about this episode:
Just a couple of points on this episode. First off, we couldn't call Shiva "Shiva" because (& I swear to God this is true), the people at BS&P [Broadcast Standards & Practices] for the FOX network said the word shiva is the name of a God in INDIA and may offend their religion. I know, I know, I can hear you all groaning as you read that (as did we all in the studio). This is what I mean when I say we deal with more than just a bunch of writers and artists working on this show. What can ya do?
Anyway, for a couple of reference points as to how long it takes to get these things on the air: I was working on this episode in the last two weeks of August 1994, storyboarding it for GRAZ. it was probobly shipped overseas for animation in late September. The actors recorded the dialog in August (maybe Sept.). I storyboarded everything between the point where Logan and Hank find his roadster and he gets in it, up until the end of Sabretooth's flashback of himself as a young'un. If anyone noticed the "Dan's Diner" sign in one of Wolvie's flashbacks, that's my name I drew in all the panels of my storyboards for that sequence. I was quite happy to see that they kept it in! I was also real pleased with the fight coreography I created for Logan and Creed's encounter in the roadster storage room. Sometimes it won't come back the way you drew it out. This time it did.
Lastly, the flashback with Omega Red was not in the original script. It was the same senario and action basically but the show's then producer, Larry Houston added him on his own at the last minute before we shipped the board out for animation. It was very much enhanced in my opinion just because of that little cameo. Larry was always throwing cameos in the show. He's the cameo king!
There was one more flashback the I boarded that was scripted but was dropped because the episode was running too long. It was a flashback that had Logan & Creed posing as arms dealers undercover, trying to bust a smuggling ring in Quebec. It took place in an apartment and the two wore suits and ties. This was based on a scene in the comics (Wolverine #49 or 50). Some of you will know what I'm talking about. Anyway, Creed gets blown away as the deal goes sour as Logan arrives to save him too late. Too bad it was dropped.
All in all, a good episode I thought. SCREENSHOTS
