Arrival
(Secret Wars, Part 1; Episode 61)

Written by John Semper and Karen Milovich
Originally Broadcast on November 7, 1997

Madame Web sends Spidey to an alien world, after telling him she's a being of pure energy and that she searches for champions. So, Spidey is sent to the world, the Beyonder's, where he's told he must past a test which includes seeing who is stronger, good or evil. Beyonder sends evil, ala Red Skull, Smythe, Doctor Doom, Lizard, and Doctor Octopus, to a planet, and causes a year to pass. Chaos is a result. Spidey's job is to save the planet. He's sent to the world, and Beyonder tells him he gets to have help. Spidey is faced in front of a machine that can bring so called heroes, from anywhere. Spidey calls for the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Captain America, and Storm. They arrive, and Spidey tells them the story.Seconds later, the Lizard busts out of a room in the compound and attacks. The team eventually stops him. While talking again later, Spidey or none of the others pay attention to Lizard, and he escapes outside. They run out after him, and confront sandworms. Narrowly, they get inside and turn on the building's force field. Later, Mr. Fantastic puts Lizard in an alien machine, and brings out the Curt Conners persona of the Lizard. Lizard then joins the team. The episode ends with everyone joining Spidey, and Spidey telling Lizard how he has a tape recorder as is going to record everything.

NOTES

The Incredible Hulk and She-Hulk were originally supposed to take part in the Secret Wars, but UPN would not allow them to appear on a FOX cartoon show. Also, the entire X-Men team was supposed to appear, but the producers couldn't afford to bring everyone down from Canada again (since it had cost so much to get them for the two episodes in Season 2). Consequently, the Hulk and She-Hulk were replaced with the Lizard, and Storm's original Los Angeles-based voice actress was used in place of her Canadian one.

Quinton Flynn is the only person to reprise his role from the "Fantastic Four" cartoon.

An episode featuring the X-Men was originally supposed to take place after this episode. The script was finished, but it winded up being dropped due to the costs of bringing in all of the X-Men voice-actors. It featured Mr. Sinister as the villain (although it was originally going to be Magneto), and Spider-Man actually winds up wearing a black symbiote temporarily since his costume gets torn up pretty badly. It was actually a pretty good episode. I would have prefered it over "The Gauntlet of Red Skull," if only since we'd already seen plenty of Red Skull and Dr. Octopus this season.
