Biography
As the X-Men's by-the-book field commander, Cyclops takes his job very seriously (too seriously, some would say). He emits a powerful optic "energy beam" (dependent on sunlight) from his eyes. Cyclops controls his optic blast powers through his visor or special sunglasses.
Young Scott was on a trip to Alaska with his parents and brother, Alex. The plane caught on fire and with only one parachute , Scott and his brother were the only two to survive. They were then sent to live at an orphanage where Alex was adopted leaving Scott by himself. Scott's powers soon began to manifest much to the satisfaction of the operator of the Orphanage, Mr. Sinister. Mr. Sinister, seeing Scott's powerful potential, became obsessed with using Scott's DNA to create a powerful mutant.
Scott couldn't take the ridicule and loniness of being a mutant at the orphanage so he ran away. With his new ruby quartz glasses, his powers could be restrained. Scott was contacted by Charles Xavier and became a member of his school. At the Xavier Institute, Scott met Jean Grey, who he fell in love with.
Cyclops lead the team on its first mission to destroy all the files at the Mutant Registration Headquarters. Upon leaving, they were attacked by Sentinels and Morph and Beast were shot. Cyclops made the decision to leave them behind, which haunted him when Morph was believed dead and Beast was incarcerated. (Night of the Sentinels Part II)
Scott and Jean tried to get married, but Jean was kidnapped by Mr. Sinister's Nasty Boys. Scott and the X-Men went after them and Scott was captured as well and Mr. Sinister revealed his plot to use his and Jean's DNA to create his invinsible mutant, but his plans were foiled by the X-Men. (Till Death Do Us Part)
When Jean was merged with the Phoenix and she took the X-Men with her to save the universe from the Shiar Emporer D'Ken who had gained the power of the Crystal, Scott was abducted by Corsair, leader of the Intergalactice Pirate group the Starjammers. Scott was to be a weapon to destroy the Emporer thus letting Corsair keep the Crystal and the bounty money from D'Ken. Little did Scott know at this time that Corsair was actually his father who had been saved by the Shiar before the plane was destroyed. (The Phoenix Saga Part IV - Starjammers)
Jean/Phoenix triumphed over D'Ken and took the Crystal into the heart of the sun so its powers could never be unleashed again. Jean/Phoenix seemed to have perished while taking the Crystal into the sun, causing Scott much emotional pain. (The Phoenix Saga V - Child of Light)
In mourning, Scott quit the X-Men and took some time off to think. He went to his old orphanage where he discovered that the new operator of the orphanage was using mutant children to advance his adgenda. Scott foiled the plot and afterwards discovered that Jean/Phoenix had not perished. (No Mutant is an Island)
Scott was finally reunited with Jean when the Phoenix Entity agreed to leave her. (The Dark Phoenix Saga Part IV - The Fate of the Phoenix)
In the wake of the Phoenix Saga, the Shiar were chasing after the Starjammers. Corsair took refuge on Earth and asked Cyclops for asylum. It was at this time that he revealed that he was Scott's father. (Orphan's End)
Xavier's Final Words: "Cyclops, were I your father, I would tell you that no truer son could ever be."
